The European Universities alliances are a flagship initiative of the European strategy for universities. The 65 European Universities alliances involve more than 570 higher education institutions of all types from across Europe.
Launched following French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech delivered at La Sorbonne in 2017, the European Universities alliances are an important lever for transforming the European higher education landscape, accelerating student mobility and (re)inventing educational pathways. European Alliances also contribute to boosting the competitiveness of European Research & Innovation (R&I) by promoting scientific exchanges and the development of joint research projects. Finally, EUAs are key actors in enhancing the international attractiveness of European HE systems. Since 2019, 65 EUAs have been created thanks to the strong commitment of university rectors, students and academic and administrative staff. These world-class networks of HEIs enable the structuring of knowledge sharing and exchanges in the European Union and beyond. Within the alliances, universities are able to pool resources, expertise and knowledge and promote a more dynamic and innovative HE environment. The continuous mechanism of cross-fertilisation leads to a richer and more diverse offer of educational services and seamless mobility of students, staff and researchers between partner institutions.
